RPM Employee Spotlight: Samuel Barrera and Matthew Fey
Samuel Barrera has worked in Facilities for nine years, but his UT San Antonio journey spans more than two decades. Each week he starts by mapping out priorities for upcoming events and moves, assigning duties to his team and lending a hand with the most crucial projects. He also conducts walkthroughs to ensure operations run seamlessly.
For September’s Employee Spotlight, Real Estate and Property Management is celebrating two Facilities team members who help keep UT San Antonio running smoothly every day: Samuel Barrera and Matthew Fey. Both have been recognized for their dedication, teamwork and impact across campus.
A combined 27 years of service
"My favorite part of the job is talking and getting to know people on campus," Barrera shared. "Our work puts us in contact with so many people every day, and I really enjoy those connections."
Matthew Fey joined UT San Antonio Facilities six years ago and describes his role as anything but routine. With 6 million square feet of campus space to maintain, he says there’s always something new to tackle, from planning projects to responding to unexpected challenges.
"Never a dull moment!" said Fey. "I love working with my colleagues across departments and especially enjoy the chance to support the research labs. Knowing that my work can directly impact students and professors is really rewarding."
Their work extends far beyond the university’s campuses, with projects taking them to places like the Alamodome, Six Flags, the historic Menger Hotel downtown and even the State Capitol in Austin.
Outside of work
When he’s off the clock, Barrera enjoys playing the ukulele, grilling, playing FIFA on Xbox and spending time with his wife and their three dogs. Fey spends his free time with his girlfriend and family, and he has a wide range of hobbies, from pottery and basketball to making trips to the beach. This fall, he’s looking forward to picking up tennis once the weather cools.
Celebrating connections
While their workdays look very different, both Barrera and Fey share a passion for making connections, whether it’s building relationships across campus or supporting faculty and students with their research needs. Their energy, dedication and commitment to UT San Antonio make them a vital part of the Facilities team and the Roadrunner community
