Devin Gibson receives invite to San Antonio Spurs training camp

UTSA Ambassadors program

SAN ANTONIO — Former UTSA men’s basketball player Devin Gibson has received an invitation to the San Antonio Spurs 2011 Training Camp, which gets underway Friday at the Spurs Practice Facility.

The Houston native helped guide the Roadrunners to a 20-14 record — the program’s first 20-win season in 19 years — and to the Southland Conference Tournament Championship in his final season in 2010-11. UTSA earned the league’s automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament and defeated Alabama State, 70-61, at the NCAA First Four for the school’s first-ever NCAA postseason victory in any sport.

One of two players in NCAA Division I to post two triple-doubles last year, Gibson ended his collegiate career as the Southland’s all-time career steals leader (323) and finished third as the third-leading scorer in school history with 1,681 points behind former Spurs guard Devin Brown (1,922) and Derrick Gervin (1,691). He also established career records for games played (119), starts (111), free throws (643) and assists (549). Gibson made a school-record 232 free throws as a senior and finished second in assists (183) and third in steals (91) on the single-season charts.

Gibson received first-team All-Southland honors after leading the league in assists (5.4), steals (2.7) and minutes played (35.0) and ranking fourth in scoring (17.0). He was named the Most Valuable Player of the 2011 State Farm Southland Conference Basketball Tournament after leading No. 7 seed UTSA to upsets of the top three seeds en route to its first title since 2004. He also was tabbed first-team All-District 23 by the National Association of Basketball Coaches and he repeated as Southland Men's Basketball Student-Athlete of the Year.

A tradition of giving: Student Affairs celebrates the season by adopting San Antonio families and seniors

Twenty offices across the Division of Student Affairs were joined by UTSA Ambassadors, Honors Alliance, the Sports Medicine Society, and Alpha Omicron Pi in adopting 21 families and 14 seniors, totaling 134 individuals, through the Family Service Association Adopt-a-Family program this holiday season.

Thirteen volunteers and ten packed cars and trucks delivered gifts to The Neighborhood Place on December 14th. The Family Service Association coordinated the adoption of 750 families in our community this year. Families are carefully selected for the program. Most of the selected families are very low income and many of the families have experienced job loss, death in the family, or medical emergencies this year.

This is the fourth year of UTSA Student Affairs participation in the program and each office and organization puts its own tradition into the service project. In some offices, each staff member adopted one family member and shopped for the needs and wants of that individual. Other groups have a gift wrapping party as a part of their holiday celebration, and many offices donate canned goods and gently used clothing in addition to new gifts. “Participating in the Adopt-a-Family program at UTSA each year reminds us all how lucky we are to work at an institution that values giving back to the community” said John Kaulfus, Associate Dean of Students. “The time I spend picking out gifts for my family members helps me to remember the real reason for the holidays….giving thanks for my many blessing and giving to others.”

To receive a monthly email with service opportunities please email engaged@utsa.edu, or visit www.utsa.edu/ice/vs to learn more about UTSA’s volunteer efforts. For more information about the Family Service Association and the Adopt-a-Family program visit http://family-service.org.

2011 Southwestern Black Student Leadership Conference (SBSLC)

UTSA Ambassadors program

The Student Leadership Center is extremely proud to announce that six students who attended the 2011 Southwestern Black Student Leadership Conference (SBSLC) have been accepted this year as part of the 2012 SBSLC Advanced Leadership Institute. It is such an honor to have six UTSA students chosen to participate in such a selective and prestigious leadership institute.

The Southwestern Black Student Leadership Conference is now in its 24th year as a student created and student ran leadership conference focused on developing and strengthening leaders at all levels. In 1999, The Advanced Leadership Institute (ALI) was developed to provide seasoned leaders with a more in depth leadership experience that will prepare them to be transformational leaders on their campus and community.

For the first time, UTSA students were offered the opportunity to apply to be a part of ALI. The six selected students submitted well-written, focused, and truly moving answers to why they should participate in the institute. The students selected to attend ALI 2012 are: Torrie Jackson, Kiara Gradney, Samantha Staton, Stephanie Agboola, Oluwaseun Adeyinka, and LaKendria Ellis.

When asked why they wanted to be included in the institute, they shared the following statements:

“SBSLC touches various goals in my life and being granted the opportunity to participate will allow me to immerse myself even more into the interactive workshops and truly bring back ideas to my chapter and to my campus as a whole.” – Torrie Jackson

“This year, if I am selected to attend, I want to enhance my skills of leadership and broaden my network so that UTSA can benefit from having great leaders on its campus, and also benefit by having insightful presenters that are willing to come to UTSA and help us change our campus community.” – Kiara Gradney

“If given the opportunity to attend, I will fully take advantage of the learning and networking skills. I am excited and honored to have this conference offered to UTSA students and looking forward to building my strengths and experiences.” – Samantha Staton
“In being able to attend, I would take it as an honor and privilege being as I was able to apply many of the strategies and character building skills learned last year to my life and organization. I learned so much from the conference that I counted it as nothing short of a blessing and I know ALI will be even greater.” - Stephanie Agboola

“The wisdom I obtained from last year’s conference can be further used and developed now that I have the foundations of what is expected and required to become a strong leading force.” – Oluwaseun Adeyinka

“I am ready to start and prepare for my future, I believe this will be a great step in helping me prepare for the world I am about to approach.” – LaKendria Ellis

Congratulations to a very deserving group of student leaders. The Student Leadership Center could not be more proud to have you representing UTSA.
