UTSA "Study Center" Comes to University Center

Beginning April 30th, the UTSA University Center will transform into the UTSA Study Center with expanded building hours in order to support students as they prepare for final exams.

“The Academic Affairs Committee of the Student Government Association approached us last semester about overcrowding in other study spaces on campus, as the heart of student life – we are happy to help in any way we can. Many student unions around the country expand their operating hours during finals, the UC is the UTSA student union and we are committed to student success,”
— Herb Ganey, Director of the University Center.

The UC North building will be open 24 hours each day, April 30th through May 7th and all rooms will be available for walk-up study space. On Friday, May 8th, the building will close at the regularly scheduled time (1am). During these dates, the HEB UC Building will also have all rooms available for students to use for studying, however the building hours will remain normal hours (7am-midnight).

In addition to study space, the UC supports UTSA students as they prepare for final exams through offering free massage chairs and snacks. Business Auxiliary Services and Aramark will also support this initiative by having Taco Cabana and the UC Starbucks open until 2am, April 30th – May 7th.

For additional information please contact the UC Information Center at 210-458-4735.

Main Campus Event Requests Are Going 25Live

On June 1, University Center Events Management & Conference Services will launch a new online event request form for Main Campus spaces scheduled by that office. The new form, which functions directly through the 25Live reservation system, will offer registered student organization and university department planners a more user-friendly, streamlined method for submitting requests for event space. Student and staff test requestors have described the form as “more intuitive,” “straightforward” and “clear and easy.”

Requestors will log in to the system by using the standard university account and passphrase combination, allowing 25Live to recognize user contact information and organization or department affiliations. Availability will show in real-time as the location is selected so that users may choose an alternate if the preferred space is not available. A bonus for those who schedule numerous events is the ability to log in and see past and future reservations.

There will be plenty of help for requestors on learning to navigate the new process. An online tutorial is coming to the EMCS website at utsa.edu/events, and trainings will be scheduled throughout the summer. Later this month, Main Campus event requestors who are interested in “test driving” the new form will have the option of selecting the new form or the current one when submitting a request.

For more information on the new event request form, contact Events Management & Conference Services at 210.458.4155.

Expanded After-Hours Counseling Services Program

UTSA Crisis Help LineThe UTSA community can contact Counseling Services at 210-458-4140 for support both during and after office hours. UTSA Counseling Services has offered after-hours on-call services since 2003, utilizing existing staff members. On-call services were previously accessed through UTSA Police Dispatch and so were limited to client crisis/emergency or police consultation.

Going forward, UTSA Counseling Services has contracted with ProtoCall, a leading provider of third-party telephone behavioral services, to provide after office hour counseling services. By contracting with ProtoCall, the entire UTSA Community will have immediate access to a qualified mental health professional 24/7. Protocall professionals are experienced with college student mental health and will have access to UTSA and San Antonio-specific information and resources. ProtoCall will alert UTSA Counseling Services of over-night calls so that staff members can provide timely follow-up.

The UTSA University Career Center is pleased to announce our new Career Fair Mobile App which was rolled out on February 11th for the STEM and All-Majors Career Fair. This easy to download and use app provides an extensive amount of information which makes preparing for, navigating and working the career fair much easier for students.

The app, available free at both the Apple and Google app store, provides the following information on each Career Fair:

  • Company list – Every employer attending is shown, along with detailed information on the organization, majors recruited for, positions available, career fair booth number, a link to the employer’s recruiting website and much more.
  • Fair map – A detailed floor plan is shown with booth numbers. Additionally, if a student “favorites” an employer on the company page, that employer’s booth is highlighted on the floor plan.
  • Announcements – Activities and events related to the career fair are shown with details, including workshops, information sessions and networking events.
  • “Career Fair 101” – Provides detailed tips on preparing for and participating in the career fair including company research, dress and appearance, resume preparation, greeting/elevator speech, follow up and much more.

With 927 active users the app was highly successful and extensively used by students throughout both the STEM and All-Majors Career Fairs. There were 12,530 total screen views of the company listing, over 32,000 total screen views and over 24,000 individual sessions.

The University Career Center is committed to using technology and other resources to help UTSA students better prepare themselves in their career search and present themselves to employers in a highly professional manner. Emergency Preparedness and Police Sponsored Training Opportunities

The UTSA Office of Emergency Management and UTSA Police Department – Crime Prevention Unit are offering many courses of interest this semester: learn about personal security and safety awareness, become a Floor Captain, interface with the National Weather Service, and learn how to help others in times of crisis, just to name a few.

Additionally, you may have noticed some changes and additions to the HR Training and Development course catalog regarding Emergency Management and Police Department sponsored trainings. In late fall, a new training category was developed for the course catalog entitled Emergency Preparedness (EP). In the past, all emergency management and Police sponsored trainings were coded under Safety (SA) or Staff Development (SD). Under the new catalog, all emergency management and PD courses will now be recorded as Emergency Preparedness (EP), and all past student history dating back to the inception of these courses have been re-coded with the EP prefix.

To register, visit MyTraining to confirm your seat and ensure you receive credit for the course.

We look forward to seeing each of you. Remember, preparedness is EVERYONE’s responsibility!
