UTSA Club Sport Focus: Powerlifting Team

Our Club Sports offer an excellent opportunity for students to pursue their athletic passions while at UTSA. Campus Recreation, in support of our vision to be recognized leaders in student development and collegiate recreation, financially supports students each year to represent UTSA at Club Sports regional and national tournaments.

Here are just a few recent examples of the many program successes:

  • Women’s Club Powerlifting won its second national championship at the 2015 USAPL Collegiate National Championships held April 10-12 in Atlanta. Additionally, two female members won their individual weight class national titles. The team’s national title is the second for a UTSA club.
    • Allegra Hudson, a senior, won her third national title by winning the 47 kg (103.6 lbs.) weight class. Hudson won with a best squat of 145 kg (319 lbs.), best bench press of 70kg (154 lbs.), and best deadlift of 150 kg (330 lbs).
    • Dakota Young, a freshman, won a national title in the 72 kg (158.7 lbs.) weight class. Young finished with a best squat of 210 kg (462 lbs.), best bench press of 102.5 kg (225.5 lbs.), and best deadlift of 192.5 kg (423.5 lbs.).
    • Top 10 finishers included the two individual national champions, along with a second place finish from both freshman Jaelynn Clark, and junior Giovanna Ortega, a sixth place from sophomore Allison Garcia and seventh place from sophomore Alexandra Garcia. These strong performances helped lead the club to the national title over Northeastern University and The University of Texas at Austin.
  • Men’s Club Powerlifting finished third overall in the nation for the second year in a row. One male member won a national title in his individual weight class.
    • Twelve of 15 team members finished in the Top 10. The team was led by national champion, and freshman, Coy Jorden (83kg/182.9 lbs. class).
    • Coy Jorden won his weight class with a best squat of 290 kg (638 lbs.), best bench press of 195 kg (429 lbs.), and best deadlift of 287.5 kg (632.5 lbs).
    • Mauricio Valdez, a junior, took home a second place finish in the 83kg (182.6 lbs) weight class. This is Mauricio’s consecutive second place finish in his weight class.
    • Top 10 finishers also included fifth place from freshman Alan Espinosa and sophomore Faithful Alabi, sixth place from junior Jess Rutledge and freshman Angel Moreno, seventh place from senior Andrew Sandoval, eighth place from freshman Garrett Shantz and senior George Pena, ninth place from junior Paul Alabi and senior Michael Butler and tenth place from sophomore Khalid Schuler.
    • Including this year’s champions, the powerlifting club has had an individual national champion for the sixth year in a row.

Campus Recreation would like to congratulate the entire team for their accomplishment!
