University Center Wins 3 Awards

The University Center was recently awarded three awards at the regional Association of Colleges Unions International (ACUI) Conference in Houston, TX. ACUI is a educational organization that brings together college union and student activities professionals from thousands of colleges and universities in seven countries around the world. Our region includes Missouri, Oklahoma, Texas, Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi, and Louisiana. The regional conference was held at The University of Houston and included a graphic design competition. Categories for submission included: brochures, posters, promotional campaigns, logo/brand identity, t-shirt, multi-page publications, calendars/schedules, digital campaigns, and 3D out-of-the-box items. The University Center won:

• 1st place for logo/brand identity (Roadrunner Express)
• 2nd place for promotional campaign (Study Center)
• 3rd place for trifold brochures (Nov/Dec Programs calendar)

All materials and designs submitted were created completely by UC student staff. The student manager in the UC Graphics area, Taylor Cole (pictured), spent many hours coordinating this effort. We are very proud of our staff in the UC for their hard work throughout the year. We couldn’t do it without them!

Andrew Hubbard Speaks at State of the University Address

Student Government Association President Andrew Hubbard did a wonderful job participating in the presentation leading up to President Ricardo Romo's State of the University Address.

Career Center Hosts Coffeehouse

On November 10th the University Career Center hosted its first ever “Career Center Coffeehouse”. The Coffeehouse is a casual meet up event where students can have an informal conversation with an expert in a career field. The first event was hosted by Juan Renteria on “Careers in Law”. Mr. Renteria is a Dallas-based attorney, educator and legal expert, and a UTSA alumnus.

Students interested in a career in the legal profession enjoyed coffee, pastries, great conversation and learned about the challenges, obstacles and rewards of a career in law.

More Coffeehouse meets ups are being planned on other professions. Watch Handshake for announcements!

Sanah Jivani Selected for National Student Advisory Council

We are very happy to announce that Sanah Jivani, class of 2017, has been selected to join AAUW’s National Student Advisory Council (SAC).

Sanah, and her leadership on The University of Texas at San Antonio campus, stood out as one of ten emerging leaders from a competitive applicant pool of undergraduate and graduate students from campuses across the country. Your school should also be commended for its role in providing an environment for such a strong leader to thrive.

By joining the SAC, Sanah will help form a unique feminist team that helps AAUW grow and connect with our student community. SAC members also play a critical role in planning AAUW’s annual National Conference for College Women Student Leaders (NCCWSL).

Katherine Tran Named Frederick Douglass Global Fellow

The Frederick Douglass Global Fellowship is a nationwide initiative designed to break down the barriers of cost, curriculum, and culture to make study abroad accessible to students from Minority Serving Institutions (MSIs).

We received nearly 100 applications from students around the country. Katherine Tran has been selected as one of the ten students to represent your Minority Serving Institution in London during the summer of 2017. CIEE and CMSI were so impressed by Katherine’s application and are honored to have her represent your institution.

These Frederick Douglass Global Fellows are meritorious individuals who demonstrate high academic achievement, possess exemplary communication skills, display the hallmarks of self-determination, exhibit characteristics of bold leadership, and have a history of service to others. In the spirit of Frederick Douglass, one of America’s most powerful intellectuals, communicators, and scholars, they have committed to sharing their experiences and intercultural growth with peers and classmates before, during, and after their summer abroad.

This year's cohort of 10 students will take part in a summer study abroad program designed to enhance their leadership and intercultural skills in London, England. Future Frederick Douglass Global Fellows will participate in study abroad programs in Cape Town, South Africa (summer 2018), and Seoul, South Korea (summer 2019).
