Social Security Number/Card for Non-Citizens

Background

All UTSA employees are paid based on an employment record created by People Excellence. This record is usually initiated using an official Social Security number (SSN) as assigned by the US Social Security Administration (SSA). If a SSN has not yet been assigned by the SSA, the department should work with Payroll to create an ID number that can be used to establish an employment record so that an employee can be paid.

Step One

Preparing to visit the SSA

Preparation is required before going to the SSA local office. Guidance for what is needed based on your Visa category can be found on the International Programs website.

Step Two

Visiting the SSA

Find local San Antonio Social Security Administration offices online.

For additional information, visit the official website of the U.S. Social Security Administration.

Step Three

Establishing your Employment Record

Once you have received a SSN receipt from the local SSA office, your department will need to work with Payroll to create an ID number to establish your employment record. Email the items listed below to your department so they can begin the process:

  • I-20 or DS 2019
  • Visa page from current passport
  • Form I-94

Step Four

Receiving your SSN

Your official Social Security card will arrive in the mail approximately two weeks after your visit to SSA. Once you receive your official card in the mail, you will need to present the card to Payroll and People Excellence so your employment record can be updated. Please note that faxes and scanned copies cannot be used to update your records.
