2014 Transfer Student Survey

Below are the results from the Transfer Student Survey.

Goal and Methodology

The goal was to gather information about students' transfer experiences and their needs. The survey was authored by a cross-campus team.

The survey methodology included sending a web link to 7,892 currently enrolled transfer students during the 2014 spring semester. A total of 1,599 students participated in the survey, representing a 20% response rate.

Respondent Characteristics

• 82% full-time students
• 73% live off campus
• 55% female; 45% male
• 48% job off campus; 33% no job
• 55% seniors; 35% juniors
• Primary age range: 22-24 (36%)

Summary

• 83% did not attend orientation.
• 27% did not meet with a UTSA academic advisor before registering for the first time.
• 95% plan on graduating from UTSA.

• Specific major of interest

• Affordability
• Quality of education

Rating of the UTSA Transfer Process

When asked, “Please rate the transfer process for you at UTSA,” respondents indicated:

• "Very Easy" — 34.5%
• "Somewhat Easy" — 49.9%
• "Somewhat Difficult" — 13.0%
• "Very Difficult" — 2.6%

Themes from open-ended questions

• Generally, students were positive and happy with their decision to attend/transfer to UTSA.
• Students felt they transferred on their own without assistance from UTSA.
• Students indicated confusion and frustration regarding transfer of credit, academic advising, and communication during the process.

Next Steps

A campus task force, led by Lisa Blazer and Lisa Firmin, has been created to explore the transfer process. This information has been shared with several teams/committees, and will help inform the work of this task force moving forward.
