Housing and Residence Life organized a food drive benefiting the San Antonio Food Bank. A wonderful, collaborative effort resulted in 323 pounds of food being donated, which according to the Food Bank, provided 252 meals.

A big thank you to everyone that helped coordinate and/or donate!

UTSA students and staff represented the university at the 2014 University of Texas at Austin Male Student Leadership Summit, hosted by the Texas Education Consortium for Male Students of Color.

UTSA students in attendance were Francis Garner, a senior business management major, Alvin Curette, a graduate student in the UTSA College of Education and Human Development.

Staff members who attended included Tracy Lawson, Scott Williams, Javier Cervantes and Bonita de Leon from the Tomás Rivera Center and Gaston Cantu of the San Antonio Pre-Freshman Engineering Program.

These students and staff were able to experience workshops for students and professionals focused on building leadership and networking skills among young men of color. The two keynote speakers for the summit were Marco Davis, a representative from the White House Initiative on Educational Excellence for Hispanics, and Luis Ponjuan, an associate professor in the College of Education and Human Development at Texas A&M University. The knowledge that these student and staff members gained throughout the two-day summit will be used to help plan the UTSA Men Achieving Leadership and Excellence (MALE) Summit, which will be held in the spring of 2015. The UTSA Student Leadership Center sponsored the students to attend the event.

UTSA students CaShonda Henderson, Brianna McCormick and Claudia Sanchez were selected by a special program of the U.S. Department of Education as up-and-coming student leaders and civil rights activists to travel to Washington, D.C. as participants in an historic ceremony commemorating the 50th anniversary of the signing of the Civil Rights Act. These students were able to meet and interact with peers from around the nation that share the drive for making a positive difference on pressing social issues.

They were also able to meet members of the original Freedom Riders, while they traveled from Washington, D.C. to Richmond, Virginia, for the closing ceremony which was held at the Virginia State Capitol Old House Chamber. Governor Terry McAuliffe gave opening remarks about how important the Freedom Rides were to the creation of the Civil Rights act of 1964. Catherine Lhamon, the Department of Education’s Assistant Secretary for Civil Rights, gave the keynote address, and spoke of the anniversary as "...a marker of how far we’ve come..." and also “...a reminder that we still have steps we need to make forward and we need to make them together.”

“This experience was eye-opening, inspiring and breath-taking all at once,” said McCormick. “It was a dream come true."

The UTSA Student Leadership Center funded the travel for the two undergraduate students once their acceptance was announced. Assistant Dean Yvonne Peña observed that it was an important opportunity to support UTSA student representatives’ attendance and participation in this historic event.
