True Colors and Our Guiding Principles

In Student Affairs, our framework for excellence centers on service and programming. This is an extension of our division’s core values and the core values of our university. Together, these guiding principles include such words as:

These are powerful words which serve as the foundation for our work. They describe what is expected of us and our promise to those we serve. Every day we interact with a variety of individuals who are requesting information, seeking clarification, informing us of issues; asking for help, or collaborating on a project or idea. These individuals are our internal and external customers. They include prospective, currently-enrolled and former students, parents and extended family members, faculty and staff, and various stakeholders and community members.

In my role as Student Ombudsperson, I have communicated with a variety of people over the years. These individuals all have a unique story to tell and they all come from a different place in regard to what they think (green), what they feel (blue), how they plan (gold), and how they act (orange).

In my interactions with them, I come back to these guiding principles and our framework for excellence time and time again in an effort to provide each person with the best possible service and experience. With True Colors as our common language, I believe we have a better understanding of ourselves and others, which supports our guiding principles and prepares and positions us to fulfill our commitment of providing excellent customer service day after day, week after week, and year after year.

Describe those changes to your colleagues. Remember True Colors is a tool to understanding others and ourselves. It is a common language because we talk about it and use it to articulate our perspectives to each other. Keep it going.
